Toast with homemade kaya and coffee @ Ah Wang cafeteria, Penang

Located at an unobvious food court surrounded by flats, Ah Wang cafeteria is indeed a true food gem hidden at Tanjung Tokong, offering a decent place for an inexpensive tea break. No lavish delicacies are being offered by Ah Wang cafeteria – just toasts and coffee, but they are real toothsome.

According to friends who introduced me to here, Ah Wang cafeteria has been operating for years and is reputable among the local residents, especially their toast. They offered 4 different toasts with different breads – wholemeal, Bengali (Indian bread), buns and sandwich (normal bread).

The specialty offered by Ah Wang cafeteria is their homemade kaya, sandwiching in between the breads. It comes with a custardy texture and the sweetness is well balanced. Often time, it comes accompanied with butter, or better known as Roti Kahwin. Their homemade kaya is available for sale too.

All 4 choices of bread offer different experience. Personally, roti Bengali is best dipped into a cup of hot coffee and savour the smell of coffee beans of it, while wholemeal bread is nicely toasted with great degree of browning to offer the crispiness. Meanwhile, the buns mix well with the kaya and butter, reveled the uttermost of the kaya and butter flavor.

Half-boiled egg is another popular dish. Served with two runny yolks, feel free to add some soy sauce and pepper powder to enhance the taste.

On top of that, street coffee enthusiasts may enjoy this place as their coffee was above average with clean in taste and decent flavor. Surprisingly, the cold coffee has a stronger taste than the hot ones. These cost us of total damage of RM 11.

Getting there may be a challenge if you are not familiar with the place. Drive along Jalan Tanjung Tokong pass Tesco Sri Pinang, and after a slight curvy road, turn right at the traffic light to Jalan Tokong Thai Pak Koong. Ah Wang cafeteria is hidden on your right surrounded by the flat and is not visible from the road. If you are driving a car, parking may pose a problem. Try drive till the end of the road and park at the parking spot for Thai Pak Kong temple.
