Eupe Food Court Curry Mee @ Sungai Petani, Kedah

Occasionally, following tradition is good but may not be the best. There is one modest stall tucked in Eupe Food Court at Sungai Petani, Kedah which defies the tradition of a curry mee. The non-traditional curry mee comes with two pieces of freshly cut lady fingers, potatoes, tomatoes, half a boiled egg and the most special ingredients of your choice – fresh mackerel or meat bone. The usual ingredients of a bowl of curry mee such as fried bean curds (tau pok) of pig blood curds are totally not sighted at all.

Defying from tradition, this bowl of curry mee (RM 5.00) is indeed special and scrumptious. It draws flocks of patrons to the stalls queuing for it and sometimes the queue line may go for half an hour or even longer, especially during lunch hours. I was lucky to skip the queue as I came before 12pm.

According to the chef, the mackerel fishes used were fresh and its operations depend on the 

availability of the mackerel fishes. The fishes were sliced into thin layers and fit in nicely to the soup. The usual lingering mackerel smell is hardly present, masked by the curry soup perhaps.

The curry soup is distinctive with its own mild fragrance enhanced by pandan leaves, and practically you could smell it when people walk pass you while queueing. The addition of spices enriched the soup flavors to a great extent. The soup taste was mixed nicely before the chili was added, offering a moderate level of spiciness and sweetness. If you are a spicy lover, the chilies added will spice it up and prepare for some light choking. Health conscious people will enjoy it as the soup seems to less oily.
