We noticed Kirishima Japanese Restaurant during our visit to Cititel Hotel Penang for a buffet dinner. Dubbed as one of the restaurant which serves the topnotch Japanese food in Penang, this eatery is also one of the earliest Japanese restaurant in Penang, having been operating since 1998. You may see Japanese frequented this restaurant too, which further solidify its reputation.
Unagi and Sashimi Set |
We made our reservation here to prevent disappointment, and we were greeted professionally upon arrival. The plates and appetizers were ready on the table when we were seated, and a warm towel was served shortly for us to cleanse our hands. The appetizer also served as a great snacks while we were glancing through the extensive menu list, which offers an extensive range of a la carte and menu sets.
Appetizer |
We started our food adventure here with Hotate CarpaccioĀ åøē«ć«ć«ćććć§ (RM 48). Slices of scallops and salmon roes were served with olive oil and citrus sauce topped with garlic chips. The scallops were fresh and it was subtle to describe the taste. The sauce was just sufficient and did not overwhelmed the scallop natural sweetness, with an agreeable degree of umami taste.Ā
Next up is one of our main dish, Hotate Tama DonĀ åøē«ēäø¼ (RM25). This simple dish with rice topped with egg and scallops was awesome. The rice was nice by just taking it without any condiments or dishes. As we take a little bit of this dish and go to other dishes, we do consume quite a number of ginger as a palate cleanser.
Finally our main dish - Unagi and Sashimi SetĀ é³ļ¼åŗčŗ«ć»ćć (RM72)Ā arrives in one complete set after the hand roll were served first. The set comes with assorted fresh sashimi, BBQ eels, baked oysters served with appetizier, salad, egg custard, tea pot soup and fruits.Ā
The sashimi was served chilled and it was indeed topnotch quality, even Shirleen whom was sceptical about the sashimi shrimp initially has high regard towards it after trying. The baked oysters was totally different from previous baked oysters we have tried before, and we believed the oysters were make into pieces and blended well with the eggs.Ā
Two pieces of hand rolls - crab stick and shrimp tempura arrives early before the set comes. The hand rolls itself were nice without the need to dip into the soy sauce.Ā
We also ordered 3 Yakitori - Yakitori (RM6), Uzura Bacon (RM6) and Buta Suji (RM6). It was less sinful to take Yakitori after such a heavy meal as it was grilled, and both Yakitori and Buta Suji has tender meat. The Uzura Bacon was actually bacon wrapped quail egg.Ā
Undeniably Kirishima Restaurant served one of the Japanese food we have tried so far, and I believe Japanese food lovers in Penang would fall in love to the food here. Nevertheless, the price is slightly on a higher side but it is well justified with the quality of food being served. A variety of Japanese alcoholic drinks are displayed on the exterior shelf, and it would be a great place for those who enjoys Japanese alcoholic drinks too.
