Every Friday evening, the vicinity within Jalan Van Praagh turns into a bustling street with vendors are setup on both sides of the street, stretching into Jalan Ooi Thiam Siew and Jalan Tapah. Oftentimes, the locals refer it as Taman Kheng Tian night market.
This place is a gem of the night as close to hundred hawkers can be found here, and some of the best Penang food inarguably are being churned out here. Daily groceries, clothes and interesting items are often sighted too, bearing wallet friendly price tags. As Friday marks the end of normal working days, the crowd over here is enormous.
Night market is usually the birth place for newly invented food, and we do spot some catchy and interesting creations here. Quite a number of youngsters here are carrying a bottle of Coke here. It turned out to be Korean fried chicken cubes topped with its sauce of your choice, and with Coke filling at least 3/4 of the remaining cup, separated with each other by a thin layer. It looks sort of cool by carrying a cup of coke with a single hand walking around the night market.
Snacking is a must at every single night market. Do check out the meat rolls (lobak) and spring rolls (poh piah) by Hamidou Roll. These homemade snacks had its fillings well marinated with spices.
Do try out the popular and nostalgic Chinese snack - glutinous rice with peanut and sugar (Muar Chee) here. This popular snack has been a rarity in food court nowadays due to complexity in getting decent muar chee because the flour-to-water ration is somehow something sorcerous to work with.
If you have a big appetite, try to order a piece of fried chicken cutlet from the various stall here. It is gigantic in size and always the favorite by the night market patrons judging by the queue in front of the stalls.
Feeling hot after being swarmed by the crowd at night market? Chill yourself down with a bowl of Ai Yu Jelly, the Taiwan traditional dessert made from the gel from the seeds of a variety of figs. Feeling lethargic after thronging the night market? Coffee Haven is there for your caffeine rescue.
Somehow, the night market is scented with the aroma of grilling, making us drool as we wander around here. The grilling aroma proven to be a successful marketing strategy as it tempted the patrons to get a grilled chicken or sausages to assuage the lust to the food.
The renowned Nyonya kuih is sold here as well. Alongside with various cupcakes and pastries.
As the same with other night markets, various goodies such as bags, clothes, toys, accessories and etc are sold here. Just spend some time wandering around and perhaps something you click into your heart will be found.
