Driving across North-South Highway and feeling hungry, yet bored of the conventional food at the R&R center? Then you should considering take a detour to Tapah exit to sample this awesome yet affordable stir fried dish at this Chinese restaurant named Hao Yi Lou 好義樓饭店, just few minutes away driving from Tapah highway exit.
We had a plate Char Hor Fun, Kong Po Eel (宫保黄鳝鱼), steamed frogs (清蒸田鸡) and sambal paku-pakis for portion of 2 and it came with a staggering bill of RM 52.70, which was really affordable as all these dishes never come cheap.
It is not something usual that we will order in normal Chinese eateries, thus we gave Kong Po Eel (宫保黄鳝鱼, RM 15) a shot when we saw it in the big menu displayed in the restaurant. The eels were served in small slices and fried with onions and chilies, giving it a fairly substantial flavor.
Priced at RM 6, the sambal paku-pakis is a must order here. Fortunately we were exposed to paku-pakis during the time in Sarawak, otherwise we would be hesitating to give these fern dishes a try. It tasted great and not really burning hot, alike Malay style Kangkung.
For a slight exotic experience, go for their steamed frogs (清蒸田鸡, RM 25). It was heavily seasoned with fried garlic slices and garnished with spring onions, resulted a very strong base gravy which best for sousing the plain rice. Frogs meat were tender, and full of bones. Thus do expect to spend some time chewing the essence from the frog meat lumps.
They also serve a variety of noodle dishes and we had a mediocre Char Hor Fun (RM 4.50).
