Alor Setar is renowned of various Nasi Lemak (or to be precise, Nasi Kandar) which is operated by Indian Muslim. Typically, these types of Nasi Lemak is served along with heavy gravy. Nevertheless, I was introduced to this Abang Nasi Tomato Jalan Putra which is operated by Malay and is located outside of CIMB Bank Jalan Putra. The shop practically bears no name and the only identification for non Alor Setar folks would be the CIMB Bank.
It was dinner time and I can see a queue lining up beside the stall. A big pot of nasi tomato can be seen at the side, and the server is busy cupping it to the plates. There are about 10-15 different types of typical Nasi Kandar dishes. I can see most people picked fried chicken and squid to go with their bowl of nasi tomato.
I had a plate of Nasi Tomato with Ayam Merah, cabbages and hard boiled egg. The price ain't cheap and it comes to RM 9.00, slightly expensive than the usual nasi kandar but it was alright as they serve nasi tomato. The rice is fluffy, and the sweet mixed curry will soak into the rice granules giving a sweet finishing. Nevertheless, the Ayam Merah was a let down of the day as the texture was hard.
Overall, the nasi tomato is quite addictive and I would come back again but the Ayam Merah was a no no for next trip.
