Baling, approximately 90km (1.5 hours driving) from Penang, is
a small town in Kedah, bordering Thailand on the north and Perak (Pengkalan
Hulu) on the east. You can visit Betong, the southernmost town in Thailand from
Baling by going through Pengkalan Hulu Malaysia Immigration checkpoint, which
are within 20 minutes driving from Baling.
Baling is a historically significant place in Malaysia. On
28 and 29 December 1955, the newly minted Malayan government led by our first
Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman met and discussed with Malayan Races
Liberation Army to implore the communists to surrender and promising that no
retaliatory action would be taken against them but the discussion ended with no
agreement. This was well known as the Baling Talk.
I had minimal expectation on the food here and thought of
having KFC initially. The decision was reversed when I was introduced to this
restaurant – Shin Kong Heng. I was told that the restaurant is famous of its Pi
Pa Duck and Curry Fish Head. However due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to
opt for smaller portion of food instead of Zhu Char, and the restaurant
attendances, happily offered me a few choices – fried noodles, fried rice, Hokkien Char and some that I did not
manage to recall.
I had a plate of Hokkien Char, and I have to say it was not
that bad. The gravy was just thick enough and it enriched the noodles flavors. The
wok-hei was obvious as well. This Hokkien Char is slightly different from
the ones I had in KL or Penang as this one offered less taste in soysauce. It
was RM4.00 per plate.
I noticed majority of the patrons of this restaurant had
pipa duck and curry fish head on their table. These two must be their top
dishes. I will have to try it again if there is any opportunity.
