Nasi Kandar Deen Maju @ Georgetown, Penang

As sunset draws nearby the horizontal line on the seashore, hordes of people will be seen lurking in front of a stall, as if like there are some cash handouts. The group of people ranged from white collars, blue collars, big bosses or even family and all are preying for a decent Nasi Kandar dinner at Restaurant Nasi Kandar Deen Maju. This is by far one of the best Nasi Kandar I have tasted in Penang, bypassing the few so called reputable ones, yet the price is affordable.

A meal for three

I left the job of ordering to my friend - Guan as I totally have faith with his selection. Then I went around to entrap some Nasi Kandar essence into my camera mirror. Unlike some Nasi Kandar stalls, Deen Maju offers an extensive ranges of dishes, with at least several green leafy vegetables available to my surprise (Nasi Kandar stalls tend to have limited choice of vegetables - cucumbers, okra and cabbage)

Well, there lies the essence of the Nasi Kandar - A big bowl of reddish and sebaceous curries! It looks like this bowl of curry has undergo 7 x 7 days of essence collection (Cantonese movie lovers should be able to understand this statement)

Always ask for "kuah campur" aka mix condiments and the chef will be pleasantly mix correction portion of all curries and yield a balanced taste.

This is our order - 3 bowls of rice, 7 types of dishes, 1 teh tarik and 1 plain water and it cost us RM26.70. I personally feel it is very affordable and not ridiculously priced as I have experienced some overpriced Nasi Kandar. If you average out between 3 people, one person just need to pay RM9.00 then to enjoy a variety of good dishes!

Remarks: GST will be imposed to the total bill starting 1st of April

We actually asked for the condiments separately and the chef happily provided another small bowl of it, and jokingly teased us that "the condiments I provided with the dishes not enough?". Well yeah, I love to food my plate of rice with the curries! Slurrp...

All chickens! From top right clockwise - curry chicken, sweet sauce chicken and fried chi
The fried chicken is indeed top of the quality. It was fried just decent to achieve the perfect crispy with an elusive spices fragrance, and the tender white meat never stick to your teeth whenever you chew them, so that you do not have to run to toilet for a flossing or interdental brushing session.

From top right clockwise - lamb cooked with dates (kambing kurma), okra, cabbage and squid
Every other dishes are good as well though lamb cooked with dates was mediocre. It was such a gratifying and fulfilling dinner!

The queue seems never end by the time we left around 9pm. If it is a weekend, the dishes will be running out at 9pm as we had once disappointing time when we arrived on 9pm on a Sunday. Do come early to avoid disappointment!
