I have passed through Jalan Sultanah Sambungan and Terminal Bas Shahab Perdana at Alor Setar numerous times and the big signboard "Iman Koay Teow" has definitely caught my attention. Nevertheless, I was not fascinated to try it for unknown reasons. The thought changes when someone in Alor Setar mentioned to me "you know ar, that famous Iman Koay Teow has increased their price after implementation of GST and they should be earning a handsome profit from it". At that night itself, I am sitting right at the stall and contributed to the pocket of Iman Koay Teow's boss.
A plate of Koay Teow Kerang with Telur Mata (RM4.80) is a must try if you are here. The koay teow is soft and dark brownish coloured, and the good taste was largely contributed by the dark soy sauce. A slight spiciness is sensed as the chef could have stir fried the koay teow with chilli. Though it is called koay teow kerang, only a few pieces of small seashell is sighted. Another downside is the koay teow comes is fragmented and clumped in pieces.Ā
Though Iman Koay Teow is Malay version of CKT, I cannot tell much difference between it with a plate of chinese CKT and it tasted good. The portion is just moderate, and do think twice if you want to opt for a second plate as the fried koay teow is a tad oily and may get your artery clogged if you have too much of it.
On a separate occasion, I tried their Laksa after recommendation by the staff there. It was a total variant compared to Penang's version. The soup was much lighter in taste and flooded with shredded fish. Half an egg was served together with some chili but it did not yield any burning sensation. The noodles were much coarser too.Ā
I was too hungry after finishing a plate of Iman Koay Teow. Hence I ordered a packet of Nasi Lemak Telur (RM1.00). Iman Koay Teow houses various stalls there, such as satay and western food but the main reason that drives people here still their koay teow!
