Live grilling lobsters at action counter |
The buffet is segmented into a few corners - salad, appetizers, main courses, Japanese, noodles, desserts; and action counters - wok, Portuguese grill seafood, grill seafood, tempura.
Main courses
The main dishees offered are circling around seafood - chilli crabs, fried prawns, clams, fried salmons, squid. If you are here, chilli crab is something you should not miss out. The chilli sauce has a acceptable yet great level of spiciness with natural sweetness
Chilli crabs |
Fried prawn |
Fried salmon |
Clams |
Chat potatoes |
Three vegetarian dishes are offered to cater for those looking for a fibre diet to offset the high iodine and protein seafood dinner. The chat potatoes are well prepared with a redolent of garlic scent.
The fried bee hoon and fried rice are not that impressive but it would be a great choice to complement the heavy dishes.
Japanese section
The cafe offers fresh sashimi and sushi to its guests by having them ship to the hotel kitchen every morning. The sashimi is not stringy and does not emit the typical fishy smell. Moreover, there is no water accumulation on the tray where the sashimi is served.
Meanwhile, the sushi is not really toward our liking. The sushi rice seem loosely bounded and the sushi vinegar tasted sharp. We were then made understood that the sushi is more altered to Taiwanese style, while the sharp sushi vinegar taste was due to a different brand sushi vinegar being used for Halal certification compliance. Thus the chef has to tweak the preparation process creatively to add the usual luster and aroma emit by the conventional sushi.
The grated ginger is indeed top-notch as the taste is alike explosion upon consumption, effectively neutralises your taste buds and prepare you for the next sashimi.
Seafood
Assortment of cold seafood - prawns, scallops and mussels are offered |
One great thing about the buffet setting is that they started to serve lobsters, and there will be continuous serving of lobsters throughout the buffet period! I was there at 10pm still and the chef was still busying grilling lobsters. This means you are getting a piping hot lobsters and I saw some guests were voraciously consuming this premium seafood dish.
Otak-otak |
Action counter - wok
One of the Penang most famous dish - Char Koay Teow is served hot in this section. The chef has been busy frying for the whole night. You can request to have different spicy level - normal, extra and super; and option to have chicken or duck egg too. First time seeing these type of options in hotel setting!
Action counter - Portuguese grill seafood
Choose between different type of fishes and mussels for a Portuguese grill style. The condiments for the fish tasted spicy and nice.
Appetizers and cold appetizers
Salad section |
Cold appetizers with various seafood choices |
Look out for this cheese baked oysters in cold appetizers session. Although it was not the best we have tasted but it is hard to find them being offered nowadays. Calories concern individual beware though.
We really enjoyed savouring this roasted duck. It is one of the best we have tried so far as there is no pungent duck smell, not too oily and the meat is tender. The proportion of fat to lean meat is well balanced, tempted me to savour additional few pieces.
Fresh fried tempura |
Fruits and desserts
Assortment of desserts and fruits are available to provide a nice ending to the dinner. The choices have increased compared to our last visit.
Ais Kacang Corner |
Longan soup |
Option to take away the cake |
Others - noodle station, soup and coffee
Noodle station |
Mushroom soup and seafood soup. The mushroom soup is nice, with a thick and decent mushroom taste. |
The management has decided to add another 2 mobile machines to serve its guests better.
Lastly, a photo with Ms. Natasha (furthest left), F&B Coordinator and Chef Ho, Chief Chef of Cafe Laurel Evergreen Hotel. Chef Ho has been with the hotel for 15 years and it was a nice talking session with them.
Another thing worthy mention about Cafe Laurel is that they will have a slight change on their menu everyday and the dish will be circling around the theme. Do expect surprises if you dine in here.
The cafe also caters for reservation for groups' functions or parties, and a complimentary cake and ballons will be provided for birthday parties.
