I am not a big fan of doughnuts due to its heavy presence of sugar and high calories. I used to regard doughnuts as a junk food and it leads to obesity, diabetes and detrimental to dental health. I refused to take the doughnuts when one of my friend introduced me to the doughnuts sold at a modest stall along Jalan Teluk Wanjah, Alor Setar but her insistence on the difference of this doughnuts changed my mind. Yes, the doughnuts were different indeed.
There are 7 types of fried cakes being sold by this stall at 70 cents each, and all of them are vegetarian based.
- sweet potatoes doughnuts 番薯圈
- sweet potatoes fried cakes 番薯片
- spera 辣椰糕
- green bean fried cakes 绿豆糕
- carrot cakes 萝卜糕
- Ham Chin Peng 咸煎饼
- fried dates cakes 煎枣
The doughnuts are unique in such a way that the fillings were made of sweet potatoes. No chocolates, vanilla or any other funky stuffs you could think of. Still high in calories, the doughnuts were soft and moist due to sweet potatoes contribution to the texture. It is totally different from conventional doughnuts I have had. Most important, no sugar!
The green bean fried cakes exhibit original taste of the green bean and its coarse texture as well. There is feeling of sugar added purposely too.
Spera, which is common in Northern Region of Malaysia is found here. It is actually shredded coconut spiced up with chilli. The shredded coconuts texture is still vividly while the taste given is the slight burning sensation due to chilli.
Fried dates, I supposed the fillings were made of minced red dates but when I asked the boss, he murmured to me that it was chilli? Perhaps I heard wrongly then. It tasted 50% alike potatoes and exhibit chewy texture.
