Contrary to the most night markets in Taipei which are almost homogenous, Miaokou night market in Keelung is unique in the sense of the great variety of food being offered and its setup as well. The night market is called Miaokou because there is a temple located at the entrance of the market.

As Keelung is a port city which boosts the city's abundance of fresh seafood, some delicacies in Miakou temple are seafood based and only available here. On top of that, the price for food or other items here is at a bargain price comparing to Taipei. All these reasons allure tons of people flocking here everyday.

Miaokou temple is located within walking distance of Keelung train station. From the train station, walk east straight along the street following the harbor in the direction of the Keelung Harbor Bureau. The night market is roughly one block from the point where you cross a freeway overpass.
Miaokou temple is relatively small comparing to other night market in Taipei thus be prepared to walk shoulder by shoulder with others. There is even a designated stalls with assigned numbers.

The fame of this eel shop soup at Keelung night market has even came to our knowledge prior travelling to Keelung. It was recommended by a Taiwanese we met at train travelling from Penang to Kuala Lumpur. Indeed it was a great recommendation! According to the lady we met in train, despite the presence of many eels soup stalls in Miaokou night market, this would be the best.
The eel scented soup (75 NTD) possessed a decent amount of oil, giving the soup a silky smooth texture and a nature sweet taste which were pleasant. The eels were fresh and fried prior boiling it a moment with the soup, thus the eels' tenderness and firmness were well maintained.
Tan Shaved ice appears to be a popular choice here as judged by the number of people queuing for a cup of shave ice. We joined the fun of queuing for a bowl of shaved ice also and was rewarded nicely.. with a cup of shaved ice.
We ordered passion fruit shaved ice (45 NTD). The ice was silky smooth, with ice crystals were almost absent. It immediately gave a cooling effect, especially soothing during these hot summer days.
Tempura is something not to missed out at Miaokou night market too. We were confused which stall to pick as there were too many stalls selling tempura. We ended at stall 43, reason being there were many plates with celebrity's signature on it.
Initially we thought the tempura would be like the one we had in Japanese restaurant, with prawns or vegetables that has been battered and deep fried. It turned out we were totally wrong, as tempura in Taiwan is deep fried fish. A set of small tempura cost 25 NTD and it tasted like fish cakes for us. The fish was fresh and it was not a bad choice as a snack, except it was a tad oily.
We were amazed by how the crowd of people queuing for this pan fried stuffed bun, thus we again joined the crowd. Thinking back, perhaps we were too kiasu and afraid to miss out the good food?
A few of the staffs are busy stuffing raw cabbages into the bun. When we saw the amount of cabbage, we were stunned. A big steel mixing bowl full of cabbages. I am not sure whether I have consumed that amount of cabbage within a year even.
After the buns were ready, it will be passed to the front for pan fried. Batches and batches of buns have been served during the time we queued.
The cabbage filling was piping hot and it almost burnt out tongue. However, we felt there was nothing special about it. It was just a bun stuffed with cabbages.
We then bought this fried taro (20 NTD), just a few stalls after the pan fried stuffed buns. It was nothing special and we almost could not taste the scented taro.
The so called famous Wow frog eggs from Shilin is even available at Miaokou night market. We ordered aiyu jelly with tapioca balls (40 NTD) but was not impressed by it. The drink was basically tasteless.
This three brother tauhua seems like a very successful eatery at Miaokou night market by occupying a two storey shoplot.
We ordered set H2 - a combination of honey taro, pop egg, tauhua and peanut (70 NTD). It was quite a decent choice of dessert.
We were really unfortunate as the famous sandwich stall - 58th stall which was highly recommended by the Taiwanese lady we met the train was closed that night! We even heard some people walked past there looking for the stall and the disappointment in their faces when the see the shop was closed.
A piece of sausage for only 7 NTD! A long queue waiting and we were too full to take in anymore food.
There were too many food to be tried at Miaokou night market but our stomach has really reached its maximum capacity. I am guessing we had more than 3000kcal per day ever since our arrival at Taiwan?
Not far away from Miaokou night market, there is a modest eatery - Ah Hua fried noodles. We heard it is a renowned eatery among locals and it is open till midnight. We walked there just to have a view and saw a long queue waiting to be seated. Again, we were too full to take in anymore food we we have to terminate the urge deep inside our heart to try it.

On the next morning, we woke up late again due to sleeping late for waiting the washing machine. Thus we quickly rushed to Miaokou night market again for a quick breakfast before departing to Badu to transfer to Hualien. There were only a handful stalls operating.

We had a stewed vermicelli for 40 NTD but it did not please our stomach, both in quantity and taste.

Finally we spotted a sandwich stall was operating and having missed the renowned stall 58th sandwich yesterday night. We must at least try a sandwich at Keelung!

The chefs were busy preparing omelette and spreading butter on the bread to clear up the long queue.

We went for a ham and egg sandwich (50 NTD), fried pork bread (40 NTD) and a cocoa milk (25 NTD). We felt what distinguished the sandwich was the mayonnaise being used, and the bread was really soft.
On the next stall, we saw crab fried rice and was intrigued to buy it. However due to lack of time so we have to skip it.
