Although Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah has close proximity to the island of the Pearl, Penang but the cuisine between these 2 places have great differences. Often times, the local food in Alor Setar is able to inject a brand new sensation to the papillae, neutralising the conventional taste registered in the mind. One of them is this natural blue colour rice sells by a Chinese family, which mimics the Nasi Kerabu from east Coast.
Some people may concern on the blue colour of the rice. Fret not, it is not synthetic colouring but the family actually used blue flower to dye the rice into blue colour, making it intriguing in visual aspects. The blue rice tasted no differences compared to normal rice but it has been cooked nicely, with the rice granules distinctive from each others.
Of course, how could we expect just having blue rice but no other accompanying dishes? There are various mouth-watering dishes offered for selection. However, please bear in mind the price do not come low. It cost me RM 16 for a piece of fried chicken, half salty egg, a braised egg and some vegetables.
Nevertheless, the fried chicken is worth the price paid. It comes in a big chunk portion, and I think ladies will find it hard to finish the whole piece. The chicken is topped up with their home made spicy sauce, with a little tangy sensation. It would be better if more sauce is provided as the whole plate of rice taste a little bit dry.
My stomach was bloated to the maximum after finishing the whole plate of rice with the dishes. For me, it is worth the RM16 paid as I have my crave for a nice meal in Alor Setar satisfied.
They do serve blue drink for RM2 as well but in fact it is blue barley drink. Again, it is not some funny colouring substances added but the blue colour was derived naturally. I do feel the taste is slightly different from the conventional barley drink, perhaps it was due to psychological reason as how many food we take orally are blue in colours?
At a corner of the shop, we can see the process of drying the blue flower.
The shop is located rather hidden in a residential area in Alor Setar and non locals would find it hard to locate it. Even I took about 20 minutes just to find the house. Nevertheless, there need to be some perseverance to if you want to enjoy a good meal right? Do check out the link below on the direction.
