Wan Thun Mee ardents fans in Penang would feel affiliated to this name - Hong Kee (鸿记)Wan Thun Mee, or known to some people as Gou Lou Wan Thun Mee. They are currently operating in their own shop at Jalan Campbell, having moved from the corner shoplot at Jalan Kampung Malabar.
Despite being dubbed as one of the most expensive hawker wan thun mee in Penang, it still manages to attracts an exodus of crowd to the restaurant just to savour a bowl of their best wan thun mee in this price sensitive Georgetown city. This is because they are selling a restaurant style wan thun mee in a hawker setting.
The recipe lies within their own kneaded Jook-Sing (竹升)noodles, a rare type of Chinese Noodles popular in Hong Kong and Macau. The chef rides on a bamboo log to press the eggs, flour and other ingredients together, yielding the distinctive noodles.
The most popular choice here would be their Wan Thun Mee (RM 5.50). Topped with shredded char siew (pork slices) and nice wan thun beneath the noodles, it satisfied our appetite for a bowl of great wan thun noodles.
Hong Kong Shai Rong (RM 5.50) is the soup version of wan thun mee. The nicely and light scented soup matches the noodles well for those prefer a lighter meal for dinner.
The wan thun here are indeed top of the quality. It was wrapped with a thin skin and packed with a rich meat filling. It was too good that we cannot resist to order another plate of wan thun.
The fried wan thun (RM 6.00 / 8 pieces) have a very crisp skin and surprisingly not oily. Crackling sound are vividly heard when the teeth crunches the wan thun.
Hong Kee Wan Thun Mee restaurant does serve a range of mouthwatering snacks or side orders.
Another side order we tried was Tofu (RM 4.80 / 4 pieces). It was fried to have excellent skin texture and maintained the balance between softness and crunchiness filling. In fact, the texture almost misled us that we were served fishballs.
Perhaps we were not used to the shrimp roe scent, we find their Hong Kong Shrimp Mee (RM 6.50 small) a bit too fishy.
Char Hor Fun (RM 5.50 small) were fried with strong wok hei, drenched with starchy sauce. The portion were a bit too small for one, we are wondering how much the portion would be if we ordered it medium.
Sui Kao Soup (RM 1.50/piece), the dumpling was packed with ingredients and prawn, however the soup was too salty to finish.
On top of their signature wan thun noodles and side orders, the restaurant also serves various dishes such as hokkien char, oysters noodles and etc on the menu. The feedback we heard so far were positive on the dishes.
On top of that, even though the restaurant is always packed of patrons but the service is fast and efficient.
