When we walked pass Short Street at Singapore, the exodus of crowd flocking a corner lot shoplot - Rochor Original Beancurd drew our attention. We googled it and found it appeared to be a big name selling Tau Huay, and has history back dated in 1960. Our intuitive feeling told us this was definitely something great and bearing high expectations, we ordered some snacks, and its signature beancurd (tau huay) without hesitation.
Instead of serving in a traditional porcelain bowl, the tau huay was served in a plastic container. Although the tau huay was smooth, it was insipid and tasteless, lacking the aromatic soy bean extract. The concoction was like a tasteless floury white stuff immersed in a over sweetened sucrose solution. I am not sure whether we set our expectations too high, or we were not used to tau huay here.
The soybean milk taste significantly better but still far to be matched the reputation it had. It was diluted, and lacking the consistency of the milky soybean water.
The fritters and egg tarts were mediocre. We should have controlled our impulsive reaction and buy lesser. We were unsure why the eatery was thronged by people but definitely the food here was far from worth coming second times.
