Andrew's Kampung Restaurant @ Batu Ferringhi

As we were strolling in the touristy town of Batu Feringghi, dozens of restaurants located at both side of the narrow road had servers chanting a smile to you, inviting you to dine in their settings. However, there was an obscured restaurant located at the 2nd floor of three floor commercial building nearby the Batu Feringghi Night Market - Andrew's Kampung. Escalators were available but it was hidden behind the building, and it appeared staircases were the only choice. Do not be discouraged on having the needs to climb up the staircase as your stomach will be well rewarded with the delicacies here. As a Penangnite, we do not find Batu Feringghi offers much interesting food and this was definitely an interesting find.

When we reached the restaurant at 9:15pm, we were amazed because it was almost full house and the restaurant closes at 10:00pm actually. The restaurant serve Malaysian style food, such as stir-fried vegetables, curries, fried rice, noodles and etc. Good thing is they offer all dishes in either half or full portion to cater for both small and big groups. Though it was almost fully seated but we did not wait long for our food to come.

All the stir-fried foods we tried tonight were delectable. We tried a few, namely Indonesian Fish (RM 10.90, half portion), Devil Curry Chicken (RM 10.90, half portion) and Egg Foo Yong (RM 8.90, half portion). The price tags were reasonable, and were relatively lower compared to most of the restaurants around the vicinity.

Devil Curry Chicken (RM 10.90, half portion) had a catchy name as how devil could chicken be? It turned out to be chicken slices cooked in spicy curries, which the server had warned us prior. The burning sensation gradually increase as we consume the curries, but the level still tolerable for us. If you are someone who cannot take spicy food yet wish to sample the taste of local cuisines, do get ready a glass of ice water.

While the conventional Egg Foo Yong had fragments of roasted pork bellies within, the version here had it substituted with bean sprout instead. Fried shallots were used to as topping and it give a crunchy sensation to the fluffy egg texture. Do not underestimate this simple dish as the aromatic egg scent was simply irresistible.

Indonesian Fish

The Indonesian Fish was cooked in a sweet sauce coating the soft tender fish. Red onions were added to spice up the taste.

We had half a portion of Kampung Fried Rice (RM 5.90). The rice was fried to glittering gold and topped with crispy anchovies. Traditionally, kampung fried rice was fried with chili to induce a burning sensation but such taste was absence here, probably to cater the needs of tourists. Nevertheless the perfectly fried rice was appeasing enough. The half portion was just nice for the stomach of a normal individual.

The proud of Penangnites' dishes - Fried Koay Teow (RM 5.90) is available here. Flat noodles were fried with eggs, cockles and bean sprouts, then served on a piece of banana leaf. The fried koay teow here was less greasy as no lard oils were used.
