We always carry a strong faith during our food hunting journey, believing that every small town always have its specialty dishes waiting for us to discover. Days ago, we saw one post on Wantan mee being shared virally over the social media, prompting responses from one of the famous Penang blogger quoting that they have been refraining themselves from blogging it to maintain the secrecy of such delicacy. As I was within the vicinity of Alor Setar during the post was shared widely, I rushed over there to have a glimpse and taste of the mystery Wantan Mee hidden at this suburban area - Kota Sarang Semut, which means Ant's Nest in English.
When I arrived at this seemingly indistinctive eatery at the morning, it was full with locals slacking here with a bowl of coffee and chatting there, with empty plates on the tables. Without hesitation, I went to order a plate of the wantan mee, and was asked by the lady boss would I like to have wantan or not. It turned out the wantan has to be ordered separately from the noodles.
Instead of calling it as wantan mee, I prefer to call it as kolo mee (dry noodles) because it does not come partially submerged in dark soy sauce. On top of that, I am surprised to find the noodles were dredged with black soy sauces instead of white soy sauce because the wantan mee in Alor Setar used to be in white colour.
The al dente noodles had some fried lard oil hidden within, and were dredged with dark soy sauce sauce and sesame oil. The aromatic smell could be felt at the nostril when you brought the plate closer by. The dish looks simple but in fact it was the no-frills serving that secured the greatness of this wantan mee. In fact, it is one of the best wantan mee I have come across in northern region thus far.
Total cost for a bowl of wantan soup and wantan mee cost me RM 4.
