Roots Cafe by Meltingbites has surprised us as it was present in the bustling Bayan Baru township for years and we were totally oblivious towards its existence. Moreover, several blogs have given it some positive mentions, especially over its food qualities and ambiance. Without further due, we went there on a Friday afternoon lunch hour. The cafe was empty during our visit, perhaps all Muslim community went for the Friday's prayers as the cafe is operated by Malays.
The cafe menu might looks simple but somehow we find it hard to arrive to our decision. The pasta choice was limited hence we picked Spaghetti Spicy Tuna (RM 16.90) which was not that common. The pasta was served hot with al-dente noodles and the taste was okay but something needs to be done with the canned tuna to improve the overall taste. As the pasta got cold, the tuna odour powered the entire dish, rendering it unpleasant for savoury.
Roots Burger (RM 14.90) came with the option to have it with chicken or beef patty. The appearance looked interesting but the taste was somehow disappointing. The scent and mouth-feel from the eggs and cheese were totally absent. Then the patty was hard to the extent difficult for cutting, not to mention it was pretty tasteless as the grilled aroma was lacking. Even with the presence of some sauces, it still could not salvage the taste portfolio.
We loved churros after having tasted some fine churros in Australia during our trip there. When we spotted Churros (RM 9.90) is available here, we ordered it without much hesitant. It is understood that the churros in Malaysia hard to be on par with the one we sampled in Australia but this dessert here needed some fine tune. It had too much taste of flour, making the taste appalling after a few bites even with the chocolate dip.
Lucky for the day, the mushroom soup served along with the set lunch was good and we hold no grudge against the coffee here.
Perhaps their grilled menu is what we should focus.
