Saffron is a contemporary fusion concept cafe concealed in the sub-basement of Prangin Mall - Lot 33. The cafe serves a range of great coffee, alongside with a variety of ambrosial dessert and dainty meals, marking the cafe as an ideal destination to satisfy the food craving and getting a caffeine boast right directly in the heart of Georgetown.

One might wonder, why the cafe uses Saffron which is a premium spice as its name? Is it due to all the dishes served here are zested with Saffron?

The answer unveiled when we were served the premium Saffron teapot. The Spanish imported Saffron does not come cheap, costing around RM 30 per 1gm. It imparts an iodoform and hay-like fragrance, much soothing when the tea stream across the pharynx and esophagus. Saffron tea is believed to exert the cooling effect to the body.

The party is filled with when the 2.2lbs Roast Chicken marinated with saffron's herbed butter, honey, grated lemon rind & master stock, then stuffed with assorted vegetables prior roasted. The big tray is served with char grill tortilla bread, salad, cucumbers, onion rings and fries, just alike Thanksgiving Turkey feast.  

There are multiple way to relish on this dish. One may wrap the roasted chicken with tortilla bread and create your own concoction with the black pepper, barbecue and cheese sauce, or simply savour the roasted chicken on its original form. Pre-order is a need, as Saffron only serves 10 set of the roasted chicken everyday.

The robustly and tender Lamb Shank is one of our favorite for the day. The solid flavour is the outcome of vigorous processing of the lamb, which involves marination for 4 hours with specially formulated concoction of herbs & Italian chili powder, followed by 5 hours of sous vide and 2 hours of baking.

For other main courses, Smoked Duck Breast and Norway Salmon are our favorite. At first glance, we thought the Smoked Duck Breast as roasted pork due to the thickened sauce dousing the duck slices. It was in fact Shiraz Wine Sauce, rendering the duck meats to demonstrate a smooth sensation. Norway Salmon is always an elegance by itself, and sous vide processing method further delivered its authentic taste, coupling with Oozie cream sauces.

Aglio Olio Seafood has been refined by the chef to match Malaysian's gustation, by having chili flakes to introduce a stronger burning sensation. Generous amount of olives can be found within the spaghetti serving, along with some fresh mussels and prawns.

For some light serving dish, Baked Chorizo is a decent choice. It is served with chicken slices, topped with emmental cheese and eggs, packing a wonderful creamy and cheesy mouth-feel. One may have it along with the French toast baguette, just like tapas in Mexican food.

Coffee is one of the proud serving at Saffron. They use ristretto to brew range of coffees here, meaning the espresso is made with the normal amount of ground coffee but extracted with about half the amount of water. This offers a more concentrated, a bolder, fuller and more solid cup of coffee. Signatures here would be their Cold Brew Coffee with a fruity scent, and rose mocha with the aromatic rose essence.
