The Edison Hotel is a small luxury hotel with 35 rooms located at Georgetown, Penang, the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The hotel is an architectural splendour, sitting on a 100+ years British elegant mansion and furnished with contemporary furniture. Previously the site was occupied by once the grandeur Cathay Hotel before being reincarnated into The Edison Hotel in 2016.

1. Small Luxury Hotel
The Edison Hotel is Penang first's small luxury hotel, and one of the eight available throughout Malaysia.
In case you might wonder, what are small luxury hotels (SLH)?
SLH is a hotel brand affiliation company, managing over 520 hotels in more than 80 countries. They believe small hotels offer a unique personal touch that leaves a lasting impression.
Each of the hotel has individual quirks and characters, and consistently maintained in high standard to ensure excellence service provided to hotel guests.
Thus, a stay in a SLH hotel will give you a memorable once in a lifetime luxury experience, which we did experience here over our stay here.
2. Alluring Heritage Building and Impressive Architecture

All of us will definitely hype up by staying in a heritage big mansion and feeling like a tycoon.
And yes, you can make yourself feel like a tycoon by staying in this heritage mansion - The Edison Hotel.
The Edison Hotel was a 110-year old Anglo-Chinese mansion, once called Venus and built by Yeoh Wee Gark, a Hokkien tycoon.
Quoted from Asiaone, the hotel is a classic example of Straits Eclectic style featuring an Anglo-Indian bungalow structure with European Architectural features and fittings like Scottish metalwork.
Although the mansion structure has turned archaic, especially during the tenure as Cathay Hotel. It has undergo intensive refurbishment and renovation to restore its formal glory. The guidelines for the conservation areas & heritage buildings for UNESCO heritage sites stipulated strict adherence is a must.
3. Relaxing Library
We are surprised when the hotel management told us there is a library situated on the upper floor of the Edison Hotel.
Equipped with abundance of lighting, open windows with long curtains and comfy couches. It provides a nice reading environment. Guests may come over here and do preparation for their trips tomorrow as well as the lighting is dimmer in room.
Some books are being kept here for reading connoisseurs and books lovers guests.
4. Swimming Pool and Cabanas
The hotel ain't located by the beach but guests can expect a swimming pool and cabanas here. It offers a leisure activity in the hotel, when you feel like doing an activity that yields a balance between laid-back activity and adventuring.
After that, relax at the cabanas area flooded with soft natural light infused from the ceiling windows, or enshroud yourself with friends and family in the hut alike room with more privacy offered.
5. Endless Coffee Supply
We hated the feelings when the complimentary sachet of coffee provided in the rooms run out.
Nevertheless, this ain't a problem during our stay in the Edison Hotel.
A coffee machine is placed at the hotel foyer and you can dispense as many cups of coffee as you need, let it be a cup of Cappuccino, Latte or Espresso. Just make sure you can finish it to prevent wastage.
Besides, every room is equipped with a Cafe's Richard Paris coffee machine and 4 different capsule coffees, making sure all the coffee aficionados guests would have sufficient caffeine boost throughout the stay here.
6. Complimentary Tea Break and Wine Session
The hotel provides all in house guests a complimentary tea break from 3-5pm and wine session 6-7pm daily.
Guests at hotel can enjoy Nyonya kuih, local tidbits, snacks, pickles, tea,coffee and fruit juices for no cost at the hotel's lounge.
The hotel even show gratitude to its guests by offering wine session daily from 6-7pm, serving glasses of wine on guests' request. Such a warm hospitality.
7. Round the clock refreshments at the Lounge
What if you are feeling hungry in the midnight or yearning for a supper at the Edison Hotel?
Reduce the hassle of going to nearby convenience store to grab some cookies or fall to some touristy trap restaurants within the vicinity. Just head to the Lounge in the hotel and grab anything to fill your stomach like a boss, at no charge at all!
The Lounge is open to all guests' access for 24 hours for guests' convenience. This is our first times bumping into such luxury treatment.
8. Friendly Staff

The staff at the Edison Hotel is ever friendly and attentive to all the guests, which made the short stay here was wonderful.
Upon checking in, we were greeted with smiles from the front desk receptionist. They even took the efforts to share Penang maps to ease our "trip" in Penang, not knowing we are Penangites.
When we were in the lounge for both tea break and breakfast, the staff there regularly check on us to make sure do we need any refill for coffee, tea or snacks.
Do not get shocked when your room door is knocked at 5pm. The staff here are actually delivered a complimentary tea break set, featuring a bowl of water and some local tidbits. This was done without any request and they were delivering it to all occupied room. A total surprise.
Complimentary fruits are provided in each of the room as well.
9. Strategic Location within UNESCO World Heritage Zone

The hotel is located strategically within the Georgetown, the gazetted UNESCO World Heritage Site. This makes most of the point of visits are within walking or cycling distance. Fret not if you are not someone keen on walking or cycling as Penang public bus system is abundant in Georgetown area.
On top of that, there are aplenty of eateries within the walking distance. For instance, head over to Chulia Street to enjoy one of the best curry noodle or wantan noodle in Penang, or simply walk across the road to Red Garden hawker center. There are some bars and cafe within the vicinity as well.
Good news is the hotel provides bicycles for the guests residing here.
10. Comfortable and spacious room, minimalist and contemporary design
Above statement on the room is self explanatory via the pictures. The room is elegant and furnished with comfy couches and beds, letting the guests enjoy a good night sleep here.
The floor tiles are entirely made of marbles tiles, speaking the essential characteristics of the mansion.
Ladies would be delighted to spot the make up tables with mirrors in the toilet. Great thing is the toilet is spacious as well, not giving a claustrophobic feeling.
11. Quintessential Amenities
The Edison Hotel provides topnotch amenities in all the rooms.
Other than basic bathroom amenities such as towels, cotton buds and toothbrushes. A few branded daycare products such as Colgate toothpaste and Australian skin and hair products - Appelles, are offered.
Appelles collection contain essential oils, and utilize highest quality natural ingredients for great benefits and excellent sensorial effect. Not to mention the products by Appelles are paraben free and not tested on animals.
Hidden in the desk are some basic stationers such as paper clips, highlighters and rulers. It is a rare find in most of the hotels.
Amber Chia mesmerized by Pensonic hairdryers are provided in the room too.
12. Awesome breakfast
The Edison Hotel serves simple yet delicate breakfast. It offers a mixture between local and western dishes, such as nasi lemak, cereals, muffins, toast. There is no egg station but they have a dedicate kitchen to prepare the eggs depending on your preference.
Hence, if you are coming to Penang and looking for a different vacation experience with luxury feeling, The Edison Hotel will be a great choice ever!
