Surrounded by sea, Penang island is indeed blessed with abundance of seafood. Most of the seafood eateries are centred in the southern and northern part of the island, and one of it that manages to build up its reputation is Good Friend Seafood, or known to some people as Teluk Kumbar Seafood Restaurant.
The restaurant occupied an open air space beside Lexis Suite Hotel, offering an amazing partial sunset view. It has a proper menu, orchestrating the variety of dishes with different preparation methods for your picking.
Obviously fish is one of the must order here due to its freshness. Above picture depicted Laksa Grouper (RM 80), an unique and uncommon preparation method. The broth of Penang proud dish - laksa, is drenched across the fresh and soft Grouper fish, rendering a pleasant taste with a hint of sweet concealed in the mixture of sour and spicy.
While we had high expectation when ordering the Salted Egg Mantis Prawn (RM 25), it turned out to be a disappointment. We could barely tasted the salted egg sensation though the coating was obviously seen on all the mantis prawns.
Sweet and Sour Clams (RM20) did not amaze us neither. The sweet and sour concoction just did not blend with the clams. Worst still, there were a lot of unopened clams, and some of them were giving out the faulty smell.
"Yao Mak" (RM 12) was okay in the taste luckily. Or else we would have to enjoy the night with fish only, as the mantis prawns did not appease our taste buds while clams were inedible.
On the other hand, the satay selling at the corner of the eatery is a must try. Selling at RM 1.20 per stick, the chicken meat is pre-coated with aromatic satay sauce.
Perhaps we made a mistake in our choices of ordering. During the short stint for an hour there, majority of the patrons ordered fish, fresh prawns and crabs. These could be their signature dishes with awesome taste, and the other dishes were mediocre in taste.
We hope to return here to samples their crabs or fresh prawns in future.
