The charm of Lai Huat Mee Kari at Alor Setar not only lies within the taste but also the operation method. The noodles are prepared by a Chinese but helped out by a few Malay, which perfectly translate the spirit of Malaysians. When the coffee shop opens in the early morning, people regardless of races thronging here, sitting in the quaint coffee shop to enjoy a bowl of noodles.
As I read from Amazing Alor Setar, the shop is currently operated by the second generation and has a long history. A large bowl of mee kari (RM 6) comes with abundance of chicken slices, tofu pok and bean sprouts. The curry concoction has a balance nice taste between spicy and sweet, alongside with rich coconut flavor.
The chili paste is pased around from tables to tables. However, I personally feel there is no such need to add any more of it as it destroys the naturally nice taste of the curry concoction. Just enjoy the original taste will do.
The Chinese boss was too occupied to entertain the non-stop customer flow. When I approached him at verge of shop closure, only then he had an opportunity to smile for me to snap a photo of him.
Besides, I admire his skills on managing so many orders at once during my short time in the coffee shop.
