Located on the first floor of Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Indigo Restaurant is a rare presence in today's Georgetown which is flocked with hipster cafes, offering fine dining gourmet with pork free selection on not overly steep price tags. Exactly like the mansion, the restaurant itself is an architecture splendour, with a touch of classic Peranakan design mingling with contemporary furniture, offering a marriage between East and West, retro and modern. The design serves as a reflection of the ever evolving culinary palette presented by the executive chef.
Any successful restaurant will need to be helmed by a great chef. The person behind all the cuisines and menu in Indigo restaurant is no other than Executive Chef Beh Weng Chia, a Penang born, Le Corden Bleu San Francisco graduate with 10 years of experience at prestigious restaurants in the USA and Australia.
Currently the restaurant is rolling out a fine dining three course lunch (appetizer, mains and dessert) with just RM 65++, which we thought is affordable and one of the best option in the town for a quiet and exquisite fine dine lunch. Moreover, we were fascinated as there are a few options available for appetizers, mains and dessert, offering a fair choice between local and Western delights.
Many thanks to Indigo Restaurant for hosting us
Nutmeg Juice and Pineapples Frappe |
The restaurant has an extensive menu of drinks, ranging from coffee, freshly pressed juices, frappes and wines perhaps for a dinner. We were particularly impressed with its chilled nutmeg juice, a drink which hard to be found elsewhere other than Penang. It has a natural sweet taste and refreshing to cool down the body during the scorching hot weather in Penang.
The lunch begins light with complimentary bread and butter.
Soup of the Day - Asparagus Soup |
Soto Kambing |
We had a bowl of Soup of the Day - Asparagus Soup and Soto Kambing as appetizers. Asparagus Soup is a meticulous executed dish, as it gives a smooth and creamy texture with decent seasoning. Soto Kambing (mutton) on the other hand, is a reflection of the chef's versatility to manage different cuisine. The mutton is tender and the soup is lightly seasoned with spices, celery, coriander and fried shallots. The soto is not the murky and pungent type, but more skew toward a clear soup and offering a nice sleek sensation.
Other appetizers available on the menu are Indigo House Salad and Drunken Chicken Salad.
Indigo Nasi Lemak |
Atlantic Salmon |
A trip to Penang would be rendered futile if you have not tasted one of the best seller local delight - Nasi Lemak. Indigo certainly elevated this dish proudly with their Indigo Nasi Lemak, featuring blue pea flowered coloured coconut rice, served along with the classic accompanying dish of Nasi Lemak such as acar vegetables, hard-boiled egg, cashew nuts, spicy anchovies, and a slab of beef rendang, which is cooked using coconut milk and spices.
If you prefer a Western delight, Atlantic Salmon would makes a great choice. The piece of protein is cooked to achieve an even crispy skin, while the flesh is soft. Eat it along with the granny smith apple to give a sweet and crisp texture. It is served along with cod croquette with lemon mayo and wasabi- tobiko.
Fret not if these 2 dishes did not click your palate, as there still various choices on the mains menu such as Pumpkin Risotto, Seafood Spaghetti and Grilled Aromatic Salmon.
Nyonya Tiramisu |
Banana Crepe |
We stumbled across some interesting selections of desserts on the menu, apart from the foolproof dessert Crème brûlée. The first choice that intrigued us was the Nyonya Tiramisu, which is a creative blend between western and local factors. It is topped with chocolate powder, with mascarpone cream and coconut in between sitting on a green pandan cake. Kahlua is used to impart the coffee scent, supported by the earthy flavour chocolate. The entire dessert surprisingly give a light taste, perhaps due to the usage of mascarpone cream.
Banana Crepe on the other hand, gives a much solid finishing for the day with chocolate ice cream.
Overall, it was a nice dining experience in Indigo Restaurant, and the staffs were in particularly helpful and friendly in helping to facilitate the order process.
