No.8 Eight Curry House @ Alor Setar, Kedah

We would not have aware of No.8 Curry House in Alor Setar if not our one our our Instagram follower recommended us this secluded place. Despite passing through the restaurant several times both by foot and car, the existence of such place did not come to our knowledge, partly due to the absence of a signage board. Nevertheless, No.8 Curry House is a popular destination among Alor Setar folks for lunch, in particularly their distinctive fish head curry is the most sought delicacy.

The shop name No.8 was derived from the house number of their business business location, as the owner feel it was not necessary for them to have a name. No secret recipe was passed from generation to generation when it comes to preparation of the curry dishes, yet the curries are surprisingly popular. 

Dining concept here is semi-economy rice style, whereby a certain dishes are displayed and you order at the counter based on what available (even though not all dishes will be displayed). Then it will be delivered to your table after some time.

The curry is famous for reasons. It has a balance of sweet, sour, spicy, and the texture is sleek. We practically drench our plate of rice with all the curry, and to a certain extend almost drink it directly. As we were not an adept in taking fish head, we have fish meat instead, which was nice, firm and flaky. Price is based on market price, so we were charged RM 17 for the portion we had.

On the other hand, Rendang Ayam is charged RM 10 for portion of two. The chicken texture was a little bit hard to enjoy for us.

Total bill was RM 31 for our lunch, which we felt was reasonable considering the restaurant settings, taste and portion. Water was complimentary. We will definitely come back again to sample some of their other curry in future.
