Good cafes that serves mouth-watering food and coffee not necessary concentrated in big towns in Malaysia. With the 3rd waves of coffee striking Malaysia, cafe has blossomed in Malaysia and the latest cafe we visited that left us deep impression is Tiffz Coffee Gallery in Alor Setar. This cafe certainly carries a big weight, as their barista was the 2nd runner up in the recently concluded Malaysia Latte Art championship 2018. True indeed, the cafe live up to its reputation by serving good food and coffee.
Tiffz Coffee Gallery features a very much Western-centric menu, offering some norms in cafe such as waffles, pasta, burgers, pizza and their forte - drinks. As we are not familiar with cafes in Alor Setar, we feel the price here is wallet-friendly compared to cafes in Penang relatively.
Take an example of their waffles, Maleficient (RM 13) which comes with 3 pieces of quarter waffles and 2 big scoops of ice cream. Texture of the waffles were done alright, with a crispy egg and fluffy within, similar to American waffles style.
Maleficient was served in a tower texture by using the ice cream to sandwich in between the waffles to make it grand and majestic during serving. Of course, the ice cream makes the waffles complete by its excellent taste and non-crystallize surfaces.
One of the pasta - Say Cheese Pasta (RM 16) was served in an unusual format - cheese baked if you do not mind topping up a few bucks for it. It was served with 63 degree Celcius omega poached egg, dried bonito flakes, turkey ham slices with home recipe sauce. Coupling the al-dente spaghetti noodles with the cheese and creaminess from the egg yolks did make a difference in terms of taste, otherwise the pasta would become somehow lackluster.
Nutty Mocha (Hot, 9 ounces, RM 10) |
Special Ice Coffee (RM 12) |
The drinks here are definitely their forte. Nutty Mocha is lovely with the fragrance derived from hazelnut and almond, and coffee scent is never lacking from the double shot Espresso. Special Iced Coffee definitely will make dessert lovers scream upon seeing it as the signature drink was topped with a scoop of ice cream (which we presume is Butterscotch). The pairing is sinfully delicious and addictive!
