Finally Penang has a restaurant that serves Eastern European Cuisine, or more precisely Russian cuisine!
This restaurant is located at Lebuh Campbell with a Russian name - Vkusno Dom and run by a friendly Russian and Malaysian couple. Fret not, as the staff here speaks perfect English though they hailed from Russia. All of the dishes on the menu has both English and Russian name, and almost all of it appear to be so foreign to us! If you wonder, Vkusno Dom actually means tasty house.
As World Cup 2018 fever is coming, perhaps this is a great chance for you to get acquainted with the host country Russia by trying out their food as well!
Kazakh Chicken Shashlik (RM 28) |
The menu actually features more than just Russian dishes, as it covers Georgian, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan which formerly formed the Russian Federation.
We had a Kazakh Chicken Shashlik, a skewered boneless chicken thigh in Kazakh style marinade grilled to perfection on open fire. It is like the kebab we are well aware of, with the fat trimmed away. The chicken cubes are slightly bigger too and its taste did differ slightly from the usual kebab we had. It is served with salad, a special sauce and a choice of bread or mashed potato.
Russian Lamb Rogue (RM 22) |
To sample some authentic Russian flavour, we had a try on their Russian Lamb Rogue. A few chunks of lamb meat was stewed in a thick sauce, together with some potatoes and carrots, garnished with some green leaves. We believed the stewing was done for substantial hours as the carrots and potatoes almost melted the moments it comes in the oral environment. The soup gives an elusive and sleekness that warm up the stomach. Somehow, we found some similarities between Russian Lamb Rogue to some local lamb soup, although Malaysia's version would tend to possess an more greasy feeling overall.
Solyanka | соля́нка (RM 15) |
Solyanka is a soup that is common in Russia and the concoction of sausages, chicken ham, olives and chili yielded an elusive mixture of spicy, sour with a slight thick texture. It is similar to a tomato soup, albeit with thicker texture and the chili really imparted some hot kick when keep on savouring it. A nice soup to enjoy.
Kompot (RM 8) |
Kompot, a concoction of fruit drinks which included strawberries and some cherries. Gives a refreshing taste.
