The bustling Maritime Automall welcomes a new Japanese eating & drinking establishment - Akiyoshi Japanese Restaurant, the only one Japanese restaurant in Automall currently. Contrary to the conventional Japanese restaurant, Akiyoshi takes a contemporary approach by hosting a bar (featuring a prominent mixologist and spacious settings, then live music is occasionally available to cheer those enjoying a few cups of beers here. The strategic location of Akiyoshi allows diners to have an unparalleled view of the sea separating Penang Island and mainland, while feeding on a wide range of Japanese cuisine offered here.

The Japanese cuisine choices are vast here and these are the dishes we had for the night:
- Sashimi (Assortment of Raw Fish)
- Aspara Bacon (Asparagus Bacon Roll)
- Satsuma Age (Fish Cake)
- Yakitori (Chicken Skewer)
- Tori Tsukune (Japanese Chicken Meatball Skewer)
- Gindara Teriyaki (Cod Fish)
- Shake Kama Syioyaki (Salmon Head)
- Tori Nankotsu (Chicken Cartilage)
- Akiyoshi Make (Akiyoshi Special Rolls)
- California Maki
- Oyako Don (Sliced chicken with onion, mushroom and egg)
- Tori Katsu Kare Rice (served with chicken cutlet)
- Una Don (Grilled Eel)
- Kaki Furai (Deep Fried Oyster)
- Ebi Kakiage (Mixed sliced vegetable tempura)
- Kaniko Salada (Crab Roe)
To give an overall impression of the dishes here, we would say the taste is skewed toward the bolder side, especially it sauces. It did not really fit into our likings but perhaps some people who enjoy extreme tate would like it. To kick start the day, the fresh sashimi with an assortment of raw fish served on a wooden "boat" would be great for both palatal experience or Instagram purposes.
If you enjoy having some skewers, then Akiyoshi is one of the decent pick as you can see the chef preparing and grilling the skewers in kitchen. There are aplenty of choices but one of it we enjoyed is Gindara Teriyaki (Cod Fish). Its fatty acid gives it a greasy yet delectable taste, though we would have preferred a less bolder sauce. Otherwise, get a Shake Kama Syioyaki (Salmon Head) to have a taste on the chef's grilling skills.
Among the variety of rice dishes served here, Una Don is one of it that leaves us a memorable experiences. For RM 48, you get 3 pieces of nicely grilled big chunk of unagi to satisfy your crave of unagi. Another good deal would be Kaki Furai (Deep Fried Oyster) for those who wish to try oysters yet find it hard to take the raw taste of it.
One dish that caught us attention surprisingly is Kaniko Salad. The crab slices gives it unique texture that makes it serves as a good appetizer.
