Franchising from Hong Kong, As You Like Hong Kong Chicken Pot 香港随变烧烤麻辣鸡煲 is not the conventional steamboat that you had in your mind. The definition [随变] or [as you like] allows you to customize the degree of spicy and numbness of your very own pot of soup, by gradually increasing from low to extreme depending on your own preference. Another factor that excite us was the ingredients on the steamboat menu. Though the menu is relatively smaller but it features unique choices such as imported balls from Hong Kong, Australia or Japanese Wagyu, Local Kurobuta (Black Pig) and many more! For those yearning for some flavour variation, there are barbecue sticks to appease your most discerning taste buds!
Thanks to As You Like Hong Kong Chicken Pot 香港随变烧烤麻辣鸡煲 for extending the invitation
There are a few types of soup based to choose from, ranging from the non-spicy authentic chicken pot to the fiery hot Si Chuan Spicy Chicken Pot(Half Chicken). Though initially the price tag (RM 68) may give you a surprise but it is worth the value - it comes with half free-range chicken. Even though smaller in size, the free-range chicken meat was so tender and it absorbed the essence from the soup, giving a great level of satisfaction. As a matter of fact, the best way to enjoy the steamboat is to have the chicken first before adding in other ingredients, as this will ensure you savour the most original taste of the soup.
Personally, we had low degree of spiciness before moving to mild. The heat started to build up in the mild degree and in the next morning we had a smooth bowel movement time in the washroom.
Local kurobuta pork belly & Local kurobuta pork collar (RM 18 each) |
Local fish ball (RM 6), Golden ham ball (RM 6), Handmade watercress dumpling (RM 10) |
Hong Kong mushroom pork ball (RM 12) |
We were impressed by the balls here. It was not the regular fish or meat balls we had outside. The balls have a denser and more compact filling, in particularly evident on the local fish balls. On top of that, the restaurant is renowned for a few homemade items such as their signature homemade watercress dumpling, which you hardly could find it elsewhere.
The signature watercress dumpling is a must try here!
Sang Gang (RM 5) |
Fried bean curd stick (RM 5) |
Hong Kong fried fish skin (RM 6) |
Frozen toufu (RM 4) |
Another few specialty items we unearthed here is their Homemade Beancurd Rolls and Frozen Tofu.
The homemade beancurd rolls has unique multi-layering texture, which the middle is even crispier than the skin! You can choose different way to enjoy it - such as having it without dipping into the soup, or let it simmer a moment in soup where all the essence will influx into the middle of the beancurd and burst in your mouth! Hong Kong fried fish skin, another item that is nice on its own, or have it take a quick dip into the soup to savour it in another way. Just so you know, these 2 items are addictive!
Meanwhile, the frozen tofu texture is extraordinary that you can taste it level by level instead of a piece of whole tofu.
Thong Hou, Crown daisy (RM 6) |
Sweet corn (RM 4) |
Barbecue skewers: Pork Jowl (RM 8), Chicken Cartilage (RM 8), Australian kamb (RM 10), HK Mushroom Ball (RM 12) |
The barbecue items are delicious, seasoned lightly with chili powder that gives it a slight spiciness.
Marinated black fungus (RM 6), one of the cold dishes |
The restaurant has a special affection toward watercress if you realise - even the drink has watercress too! Their signature Homemade Watercress with Honey & Lemon (RM 10/Jug) is refreshing and best serves to cool down the throat and body after a heaty steamboat session. Otherwise, a bottle Tsingtao (RM 26/bottle 600 ml) makes the best companion for a chatty steamboat time with your friends here!
