Artisanal goodies are not limited to fancy cakes and pastries solely. In Georgetown Penang, there is a modest shop located at People's Court off Lebuh Cintra, where machine presence is minimal - Leong Chee Kee Pepper Biscuit 梁池记老饼家. Traditional Chinese pastries such as "ang kong na pneah", "hor chio pneah" (pepper biscuits), coconut tarts, and sometimes mooncakes during Mooncake Festival are popular items here. The shop has been operating at the same location for close to half a century, and currently is being manned by the second generation of the family with the same recipe book. That explains the immense crowd as always at Leong Chee Kee!
We have to admit that we were not adventurous enough to notice this popular biscuit shop when we were young. It was only recently, when we were actively scouting for eateries within Georgetown enclave then this biscuit shop came to our mind.
Never had we thought such traditional eateries will be flocked by an exodus of crowd. People made a beeline ordering biscuits here, and we were lucky enough to purchase some "leftover" - mooncakes and "ang kong na pneah". The rest were sold out!
Mr. Leong was seen busy making biscuits using the traditional method still in the open kitchen. Everything is by his own hand, from kneading the biscuits, coating them with egg wash and the other processes. He mentioned that through making the biscuits using traditional ways, an unique and subtle flavor is infused into it.
Indeed, the taste is different for the biscuits at Leong Chee Kee. Though slightly expensive, it tasted more delicious with an even spread of the dough, and is more fulfilling in terms of the texture.
Hope this traditional biscuit shop will continue its legacy.
