More and more residences with commercial lots appear in Penang and the latest to join the Foray is Summerskye Square, located just within a stone's throw distance away from Penang International Airport. Summerskye Square has received a few shops since its inception, and one of it is Clay Cafe Restaurant. It is a fast-casual Chinese restaurant that emulates a hybrid of Hong Kong and Taiwan style restaurant. The menu is straight forward, offering claypot rice, noodles, toasts, snacks and desserts for a quick dining here while expect the expenditure to be around RM 15 - RM 25 per pax.
The reason we mentioned the restaurant is a hybrid of Hong Kong and Taiwan eateries can be justified on its noodle choice. We had Mr. Chow's Braised Pork Noodle (RM 16.90) and it appears to be like Hong Kong style Wantan mee by having the Taiwanese scallion oil noodles.
The noodles texture is unique, al-dente with a sleek finishing. Neither it was close to wantan mee noodles nor scallion oil noodles, but we felt it was Sarawak instant kampua noodles. Seasoning was alright and the braised pork belly was full of gelatin. Overall the taste was above average.
Claypot food here should be the restaurant's signature as the name suggests. However, Cheesy Kimchi Claypot Rice (RM 16.90) appeared to be toned down when compared to the noodles. Though kimchi taste can be vividly tasted but the overall taste was plain. The Gojuchang marianted chicken was not that strong in taste too. Anyway, perhaps it was meant to be a healthy dish that portray strong kimchi taste only.
For dessert, The Big Four Taufoofa (RM 10.9) was great. It was served with yum mud, grass jelly, taroballs, barley and red beans. Upon combining everything, the tau foo fa with a more solid texture tasted good. The texture was akin similar to Muar taufoofa.
