Urbanization is engulfing Georgetown city and more cafes are gradually taking the role of traditional eateries in the city. Whilst most cafes are serving trendy and Western food, one cafe in Lebuh Kinta - 70 茶室 Nostalgia Cafe, jumbled conventional hawker fares in an air-conditioned enclosed settings as it name implies. The menu offers a few selections of conventional Penang hawker food such as Wantan Mee, Hokkien Mee (weekends and public holidays only), toasts, omelettes and etc. While the price is neighbourhood-friendly with just a slight increment compared to hawker fares, the taste of the food can be described as common taste that can be acquired in any kopitiam found in Penang.
The Deep Fried Pork Belly Wanton Mee (RM 10.90) was average in taste. Although the name is Wantan Mee, the wantan was not included when we order pork belly wantan mee. Nevertheless, it is noted that there was a generous quantity of pork belly. Meanwhile, the dish could have been better if more sesame oil was used to give it an aroma profile as the whole plate of noodles mainly offer pure dark soy sauce taste only.
As for the Grandfather's Hokkien Mee (RM 7.90), it was clearly the grandfather's recipe was not originating from Penang or I have lost my taste buds despite staying in Penang for few decades. The soup is diluted and lacks any aroma of conventional Hokkien Mee but we appreciate the noodles were cooked well.
The Omelette looks promising in the menu and that tempted us to have a Pork Shreds Omelette Onion Flavour (RM 6.50). It was average in taste and it would be better if the egg poses a stronger aroma.
Nothing out of the ordinary for both drinks we had Kopi C (RM 2.80) and Hor Kah Sai (RM 4.80 / cold). Kopi C was normal kopitiam standard while Hor Kah Sai had an unique serving style of topping the drink with Milo powder.
It is noted the cafe is only having a few tables and tend to get crowded, as it was just open recently. Be prepared to wait for a table during peak hours.
