While Gurney Plaza hosts a range of upscale restaurants offering various cuisine, there is a humble restaurant at 6th floor serving delicious home-cooked dishes in affordable price tags that had been under the radar for such a long time. Named Granny's Cottage, or better known as Wai Po Jia 外婆家, we were jumping like a happy kid to see a range of dishes that were acquainted to us but the taste's memory was diminishing gradually due to urbanization. Among those are Sambal Petai with Prawns, Deep-Fried Pork Fillet with Red Fermented Bean Curds (Tau Ju), Tao Yew Bak, and the long lost Aiskrim Asamboi! As a matter of fact, Granny's Cottage has a bible thick like menu that offer a variety of dishes that our grandmother was adept at preparing!
Petai Home Dade Tofu (RM 12.90) |
Special Sambal Petai with Prawns (RM 19.90) |
Petai, or stink beans is an acquired taste but Granny's Cottage managed to turn this revered yet exotic food into an amazing dish. For those who prefers a milder petai taste, the Petai Home Made Tofu (RM 12.90) is the perfect choice. The tofu is deep fried to possess a thin crisp skin and maintaining fluffy texture inside. It made a great combination along the petai with a slight heat component from the sambal.
If you prefer a more permeating flavour of petai, then go for the Special Sambal Petai with Prawns (RM 19.90). This traditional cuisine resonances to many Malaysians as it fits in the cookbook of various ethnicity in Malaysia - Chinese, Malay, Nyonya.
Deep Fried Pork Fillet with Red Fermented Bean Curd (RM 15.90) |
Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Cutlet (RM 14.90) |
The traditional Hakka dish - Char Yuk, Deep Fried Pork Fillet with Red Fermented Bean Curd (RM 15.90) is available here too. The tender pork belly is deep fried to crisp on the outside and tender inside, with a distinctive flavour that offers a complexity of spices and red fermented bean curd. Other than serving as a dish, it is as good as a snack too. Although it is deep fried, we enjoyed the relative less greasy flavour of it.
Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Cutlet (RM 14.90) is equally impressive. It is well coated with savoury salted egg, along with a subtle buttery scent which made the entire dish delectable.
Legendary Tau Yew Bak (RM 14.90) |
You should not miss Granny's Cottage Legendary Tau Yew Bak (RM 14.90). Though this dish may appear normal and can be found in conventional economy rice or Peranakan restaurants, the Tau Yew Back here is special in a way that the sauce is formulated in an unique formulation. The sauce has a rich and nice dark sweet soy sauce taste, along with a hint of sleekness which normal soy sauce does not offer. On top of that, the braised pork is tender in texture and has absorbed the essence from the sauce which made it wonderful.
If you prefer a more exotic flavour, go for the Granny Special Pork Trotters that offers a stronger acidity and spicy taste.

Steamed Lady's Finger with Sambal (RM 11.90) |
Another dish that packs with surprise is Steamed Lady's Finger with Sambal (RM 11.90). It is a simple dish but tricky to execute, as the steamed lady's finger could not be too soft in texture, otherwise it will turn mushy or sticky, and the sambal has to be just nice to balance it without overpowering the lady's finger. Yet, Granny's Cottage managed to pull it through with both factors well managed.
Somehow, this simple dish is one of our favourite dish for the night.
Remember the uncles that sell Aiskrim Asamboi at your neighbourhood when you were small? Now you could reminiscent your younger time by ordering an Aiskrim Asamboi for just RM 2! Yes, it is the exact same flavour that we get when we were small as Granny Cottage managed to get the supply from the original supplier.
