Tucked away in the neighbourhood area of Midlands Park, Yaw's Roast & Grill (formerly Top Top restaurant in Pulau Tikus) is well known by the locals and has been serving home cooked western food for years. The restaurant is actually their home but has been since semi-converted into a fully functioned restaurant, featuring dining in garden ornamented with greens and flowers. Often times, the tables are extended into the house living area due to heavy crowd. Despite the mushrooming of cafes in Pulau Tikus and Georgetown area, Yaw's Roast & Grill still manage to hold captive the appetite of their patrons.
Recently, we went to Yaw's Roast & Grill during peak period (4th day of Chinese New Year) and the gastronomy experience was rather dull. Apart from the signature Chicken Mushroom Pie, the Hainanese Chicken Chop and 3 Little Pigs (German sausages) we had were rather disappointing.
The signature Chicken Mushroom Pie (RM 14) was special. It uniquely features a puff pastry topping warm chicken mushroom soup. We find it is better to dip the puff pastry to the soup, allowing the warm soup to coat the thin puff pastry and yield a nice sensation. It would have been great if the soup was less salty.
Chicken mushroom pie is produced on limited quantity daily, so try not to miss it whenever you are dining here.
While we enjoyed the Chicken Mushroom Pie, the Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM 19) fall short of expectations. Although the chicken meat was tender but the sauce was nowhere close to the classic Hainanese style. First, the sauce colour was grey as opposed to the expected dark brown colour, and it offered little taste and role other than wetting the chicken chop. Perhaps thing went haywire during the busy period on the 4th day of Chinese New Year?
Meanwhile, 3 Little Pigs (RM 28) which feature 3 types of German sausage - German Bratwurst, Cheese and Pepper with homemade cheese and BBQ sauce offered little excitement. The 3 different types of sausage did not differ much between each other, though we can feel a tad more cheesy or peppery from one to another. Its accompanying sauce, homemade cheese and BBQ sauce were uninspiring in taste too.
You could taste better German sausages by buying them from any groceries stores and grill them at your home, then pair it with any BBQ sauce you can find on the shelf.
Overall, only the Chicken Mushroom Pie was exciting and another 2 dishes were a let down. Maybe wrong time to visit during Chinese New Year?
