Enjoying authentic Sarawak food such as Kolo Mee, Sarawak Laksa and Iban Food - Pansuh (food cooked in bamboo containers) is a dream come true in Penang with the opening of Rumah Asap Kenyalang Cafe in Lebuh Keng Kwee (Penang Road famous Teochew cendol) in March 2020. Prior to this outlet, they have another same restaurant in Butterworth.
Run by a Sarawakian who has a mix ancestry of Chinese and Iban, the restaurant churns out real good Sarawakian dishes. During a short talk with the owner, we learnt that she purposely went to Kuching and learn the necessary skills how to prepare an authentic Kolo Mee from one of the Kuching famous stall - Billy Kolo Mee.
One of the must try here is their Kolo Mee (RM 6.90), which is available in 3 different version - original, red sauce (derived from pork char siew marination) and soy sauce. If you have a big stomach or have a plan to share amongst 3 people, consider the order the 3 in 1 Kolo Mee (RM 19.90).
The Kolo Mee really resembles the one we had in Sarawak, especially the original version. Its unique al-dente noodle covered with its unique sauce, along with a dash of pepper renders it delectable. The soy sauce version is equally toothsome, attributed to the different than usual soy sauce being used.
On the other hand, red sauce Kolo Mee was not impressive and far-fetched from the authentic version in Sarawak. It feels like a gimmick to paint the noodle in red colour, though it exhibits an unique flavour at the same time.
Sarawak Laksa (RM 8.90) was not impressive either. Though it has all the essential components of Sarawak Laksa but the soup was too diluted. Adding the given paste and lime did not yield the desired taste as well.
Teh C Special (RM 6.90) here was good too, offering a mild sweet taste and an unique tea scent.
If you desire to enjoy authentic Sarawak food yet find it challenging to go to Sarawak lately, Rumah Asap Kenyalang Cafe will be your temporary savior.
