Any of you heard or tried this fruit - Dabai, by any chance?
Dabai is one of the exotic fruit in Sarawak. It is commonly known as or-kana in local dialect Hokkien, which means Black Olive. Nevertheless, it has nothing close to olive, other than its aesthetic.
We purposely went to Satok Weekend Market in Kuching to search for this exotic fruits. Despite it was off-season, we were lucky to spot a few stalls selling Dabai origin from Sibu. The vendors were kind enough to let us try their samples and to our surprise, Dabai tasted good! It has similar taste to avocado, which is buttery and creamy and mushy texture.
The vendor also told us Dabai of different pricing is due to its quality and sizes. Bigger Dabai will have higher price tag. At the same time, a local Sarawakian who is purchasing Dabai also shared with us how to prepare the delicious Dabai at home.
1) Pour boiled hot water into the pot of Dabai.
2) Let it set for 15 - 30 minutes. Check the Dabai texture, once it is mushy means it is ready for seasoning.
3) Prepare seasoning. The local recommended to use Mahsuri Kicap Manis Pedas for best result. Soy sauce or salt are gold alternatives.
4) Pour suitable quantity of Mahsuri Kicap Manis Pedas into the pot of Dabai and let it sit.
5) There you go, the delicious Dabai! Simple and nice to prepare!
According to the vendor, you can dry the seed of Dabai under hot sun and try your luck growing it!
