There are two street food which is always on the list for almost visitors to Kuching - Kolo Mee and Sarawak Laksa. While we have written about two famous Kolo Mee, namely Sin Lian Shin and Oriental Park Kolo Mee, we struggled to find Sarawak Laksa that appeal to our taste buds. Lady luck was on our side though, as we bumped into Poh Lam Laksa at Chong Choon Cafe that serves delicious Sarawak Laksa as breakfast.
They key component that contribute to the success of a bowl of delicious Sarawak Laksa lies in the broth. Typically, it is a concoction made of chicken stock, coconut milk and a handful of spices, though some recipes online showed usage of shellfish stock as well. When comparing to its counterpart in Peninsula Malaysia such as Laksa, Sarawak Laksa tends to taste lighter but it is unique on its own with tangy sensation.
Sarawak Laksa has its advantage aesthetically compared to its Peninsular counterpart though. A traditional bowl of Sarawak Laksa usually served with rice vermicelli, then topped with omelette strip, prawns, shredded chicken, beansprouts, coriander and lime. Poh Lam Sarawak Laksa (RM 7) has everything on the essential list of a decent Sarawak Laksa, and comply perfectly to both taste and aesthetic factor.
The same coffee shop that sells Poh Lam Laksa also offers other food such as Popiah, toast, Kolo Mee and etc. Sadly the Kolo Mee was not impressive and plain in taste. Luckily, the chili came in useful as a saviour.
