Just about 40 minutes driving from Kuching, Santubong area is home to many beach resorts surrounded by natural rainforest, mangroves forest, Sarawak Cultural Village, the majestic Mount Santubong and also often frequented by the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. Many visitors come to Santubong for a short excursion from the bustling Kuching town, and have a stay at one of the wonderful resort here.
Upon searching for the available resort there, we decided to spend a night at The Culvert Resort, which is newly opened in 2018.
At one of the infinity pool in The Culvert |
Unlike conventional luxury hotels that has king sized bed spanning across wide rooms, The Culvert fits a bed that perfectly spanned across the size of culvert pipe, and under bed space is utilized to store the luggage. Then it connects to a decent sized bathroom.
It sounds archaic, but rest assured the room is a cosy little nest that you would not feel like going out once snugging in the bed. Complimentary Wi-Fi, hair dryer, air conditioners, toiletries and shower are provided in your room, though often times you may get some random visitors such as grasshoppers or mosquitoes, which can be easily managed via a mosquitoes repellent.
The Culvert offers a range of amenities and activities that we have had fun during a one night stay there. Among them are:
a) 2 infinity pool
b) a private beach
c) sauna & massage
d) a gym
e) ATV
f) some swinging sofa
g) catching sunset by the beach or sunset deck
h) and countless Instagrammable spot
Having a strong affection for photography, we spent hours strolling the resort and took countless photos like nobody's business. From our room, to the row of culvert pipes, then swinging sofa and finally private beach.
Basically, taking photos around The Culvert is one of the free things you can do, apart from swimming and watching sunset. If you plan to populate you Instagam with a variety of photos, prepare a few set of clothes and get changed at different spot. Everything is within walking distance.
The swinging sofa is one of our favourite spot at The Culvert. If you have some money to spare, order a basket of food, and take some photos here or in the swimming pool.
The Culvert boasts of having a private beach exclusive for guests staying here, and most likely you can have it to yourself. It overlooks South China Sea and is a perfect spot to catch the beautiful sunset view. Unfortunately for us, the weather was rather gloomy and heavy cloud that hampers our hope of getting a good view.
Do not try swim at the open sea though. Just take a stroll, sit on the big rocks and leave your footprints at the sand will do.
There are 2 infinity pool at The Culvert - one near the restaurant and another one is located near to the staircase leading to the private beach. If you prefer a more picturesque spot, this latter will be an ideal space. The first picture at the top the article is taken over here.
Besides, it is unlikely there will be many guests at The Culvert at the given time despite the resort boasts of having 42 beds. Therefore, it is very likely you can have the infinity pool all to yourself.
Pick up a glass of your favourite drink at the beach club just unveiled recently to the guests.
Tanju's Cafe and Bistro is the only restaurant in The Culvert and most likely you will have your 3 meals settled here, unless you have any method of transportation that will get you to the neighbouring restaurant at Damai Central. Breakfast is complimentary, while lunch and dinner is at your own expenses. We actually pre-booked the dining vouchers for lunch and dinner via Agoda.
Orange Juice and Mocktail (Fruity Punch) |
Chicken Mushroom Pizza and Grilled Salmon (behind) |
Pepperoni Pizza |
Spaghetti Seafood Aglio Olio |
Meanwhile, breakfast will be featuring simple buffet spread, offering the likes such as fried vermicelli, toasts, tomatoes, egg, cereals and etc.
If you have budget to splurge, you can contact the resort to arrange a private dining at the deck above. We were not really on a luxury trip so only could be here for a photo.
Overall, The Culvert Resort at Santubong warrants a night stay for a short escapade. Any stay stretch beyond 2 days 1 night will be deemed luxury and boring, unless you have other plans to explore around Santubong such as Sarawak Cultural Village, or even a hiking adventure to Mount Santubong.
