Mozart, Mozart and and almost everything ranging from food, drink, coffee, chocolates or even souvenirs we bumped into in Salzburg has some connections with Mozart, the legendary born in Salzburg. Indeed, the city of Salzburg is beautiful, especially its old town where it is famed as one of the best preserved city centers in the German speaking world and has attained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unfortunately we only had a day to explore this magnificent town but we maximized our only day (less than 24 hours) here to see the best of Salzburg. The stay here was more for a quick layover to continue our trip to Hallstatt and Prague later.
The journey along the Salzach River en route to the old town of Salzburg was beautiful, especially when the sun set down.
Right next to Salzach river is Getreidegasse, a bustling and narrow street in the old town of Salzburg that will entice all different types of shoppers. There are jewelry, fashion, perfume, groceries stores and many more that tempting you to spend money here. However, you'd want to explore here before the dusk set in as most of the shops have closed when we took a stroll here in the evening. The crowd has dispersed too.
The houses here have unique design yet typical of the Salzburg historical district. It is called through-houses, where front and back of buildings are out onto different streets but somehow an arcade passage way is connecting the two streets. These arcade passageways often feature interesting items, such as arts, trendy fashion items, luxury watches and anything nice for display. It is alike an advertisement slot with real items. Then as you walk onto the arcade passage way, there might be a garden where restaurants put up their tables and chairs and make a nice place for a cup of coffee.
Walking at Getreidegasse gives a sense of transforming into middle ages. Cobbled street, beautiful doorways and wrought guild signs protruding from the building facades.
Getreidegasse also renowned as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, where he lived at the No.9 house until the age of 17. Now it has turned into a museum, and die-hard Mozart fans probably would not want to miss the opportunity to enter here. This explains why everything in Salzburg has got something to do with Mozart right?
There is a big church standing at the end of Getreidegasse - St Blascius' Church. The church has a long history dated back to 1330, where it acted as a civic hospital for the city of Salzburg.
As we walked further from Getreidegasse, we came across Residenzplatz, a beautiful square in the historic centre of Salzburg. There is a catchy fountain in the centre, which later only we found out it is the largest Baroque fountain in Central Europe.
There is lesser people surrounding Residenzplatz compared to Getreidegasse relatively. Too much crowd at Getreidegasse, particularly the a group of tourist travelling in exodus sometimes make us feel want to get out from there as soon as possible.
There is a statue of Mozart erected somewhere in the old town of Salzburg.
We did not have much time to explore any other places other than old town of Salzburg. We were exhausted after non-stop moving around in Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia for close to 2 weeks. That left us in a slight regret as there were many other places we yet to go such as Schloss Hellbrunn, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell Palace and many more.
Nevertheless, we had a good time indulging in some good dishes in Salzburg.
1. Cafe Konditorei Fürst
Mozartkugel |
Mozartkugel |
I have came across a number sharing in the Internet that Salzburg Mozartkugel, which is a small and round sugar confection made of pistachio marzipan and nougat covered with dark chocolate is a must try in Salzburg. In fact, Salzburg is the land of origin of these chocolate and the confectioner was Paul Fürst who created it in 1890.
Today, Martin Fürst is still continue his great-great grandfather's legacy and sell these Mozartkugel in Cafe Konditorei Fürst in Old Town of Salzburg. We purchased a small gift pack consists of 2 for €4 but cannot find a way to appreciate it somehow.
Nevertheless, the shop is full of people getting these Mozartkugels. I am definitely not a fan of it after trying.

2. Restaurant Triangel
Spargelsuppe (Asparagus Soup €6.90) |
We were running late for lunch and manage to find a restaurant opening at 4pm - Restaurant Triangel. It is an interesting restaurant - nice place, crew with excellent service and dressed in Austrian costume. Ladies crews were donned in Drindl, while male crew in brown short. The crew responded to guests in the restaurant in an unique way, akin to some gestures that we seen in opera.
We had a bowl of Spargelsuppe as something to warm out body and it turned out to be quite nice with strong asparagus smell.
Truffelnudeln (Truffle Pasta, €23.50) |
Wiener Schnitzel with Parsley Potatoes and Wild Cranberry Sauce (€14.90) |
This marks out first times trying pasta with some real truffle topping it. The truffle scent really can be felt and it it feels unique and nice. Tasted a bit like fermented taste, and complemented the creamy pasta well.
One of the popular dish in Austria is Schnitzel, a type of dish featuring thin protein fried in fat. We had a pork schnitzel, though you can go exotic with veal as well. The tender pork with breaded meat is enjoyable, and the sweet cranberry sauce did a nice job for giving the protein another dimension of flavour.
Overall, a nice dining experience here in both taste and seeing how the crew reacts to the customers!
This is the front door of the restaurant. Somehow it is easy to miss the restaurant if you were not paying attention enough.

3. Mozart Gelato
We were tempted to try the gelato at this shop along the bustling Getreidegasse after seeing a huge crowd here. One of the unique gelato offered here is Mozart ice cream, which turned out to be a weird combination of mint, chocolate and something else.
Not the flavour that I know how to appreciate anyway.
4. Bosna - Austrian sausage
While we were wondering around old town of Salzburg, we saw a hot dog kiosk selling Bosna and was tempted by it again. Apparently, Bosna is an Austrian style sausage topped with spicy powder. It turned out this snack was quite addictive with its crispy bread and strong sensation arises from the spicy powder. That was quite a good deal for €3.90.
5. Braurestaurant Imlauer
Gebratenes Zanderfilet (€18.90) |
Braurestaurant Burger (€18.90) |
We were exhausted after returning to Salzburg from a day trip to Hallstatt - missing the connecting train at Attnang-Puncheim and arrived at Linz instead, then took a long and slow train back to Salzburg. The stomach was growling and majority of the restaurants were closed as it was late. Therefore, we made a bold decision to dine in at a hotel near to the train restaurant - Braurestaurant Imlauer. Our concern was about the skyrocket bill but it turned out the food price here is same as the conventional elsewhere in Salzburg!
I was craving for fish after not having fish for such a long time, so I ordered Gebratenes Zanderfilet without doubt. It was a roasted pike-perch filet with almond butter served on a bedding of spinach. The fish was fresh with flaky flesh, and the slight saltiness from spinach gave a nice touch to the fish. A small number of almond butter topping the fish also gave the dish an overall nice aroma
Meanwhile, the burger is good too. The patty is big and accompanied with a number of toppings such as tomatoes, onions, cheese and salad.
The restaurant also offer a good environment for dining. There is an outdoor dining space should you prefer to get romantic over here.
