Our impression of outlets selling charcoal steamboat left Eam Huat in Jelutong since Goh Huat Seng ceased operation about 2 years ago. However, we forgot the existance of 传意火炭炉 Chuan Yee Charcoal Steamboat, a traditional steamboat outlet in Jalan Kek Chuan Georgetown opposite of Soul Cafe. Apparently, the steamboat has been in operation since 2014 and serves delicate charcoal steaamboat. Expect long waiting hours if you are coming here during peak time especially weekends, as locals still throng here for a flavorful pot of steamboat.
At first glance, Chuan Yee traditional fish fillet charcoal steamboat pot may appear to be expensive at RM 80 or RM 85 with fried fish fillet and fried grouper fish head respectively. However, a detailed description show the set comes along with other accompaniments such as homemade meat balls, white fish balls, cabbage, abalone mushrooms, tofu po and enokikate. Moreoever, we got to know the soup base was prepared, cooked and simmered a night before. No wonder we could savour a natural sweet taste and it is so addictive to enjoy the soup.
The steamboat pot is served piping hot to our table after a long wait, and we can see burning charcoal in the pot spout. At the same time, we also ordered homemade minced meat (RM 8.80), homemade prawn minced meat (RM 15.00), homemade fried wantan (RM 8.50) and fried fish skin (RM 12.00). Then it was proven all these were too much for the three of us to consume, though all these homemade accompaniments were delicious, especially the homemade meat and prawn minced meat.
As for the sauce, you can help yourself at the designated counter and there are about 10 different sauces and condiments to choose from. Overall, we kind of enjoyed the steamboat at Chuan Yee and definitely will return for future visit.
