When we thought the pandemic would bring a devastating effect to the F&B industry, the reality in otherwise. More new cafes are emerging, while the pretentious cafes are phasing out gradually. So we happened to check out the list of cafes opening in 2021 and we saw Pace Cafe in Beach Street. As Pace Cafe is located in a relatively touristy area, we knew it would be an Instagrammable cafe and it turned out their food is pretty decent and worth the visit too.
Pace Cafe is like a modern home nested within a heritage house. The lighting and furniture, coupled with some green leaves and antique red bricks make it ideal for Instagram pictures spot on the ground floor.
Meanwhile, the second floor is simpler and cozier. Distance betwen tables are sparse, and there are hanging chairs that makes me feel like laying there and do nothing.
The food selections at Pace Cafe are pretty much cafe standard options - Western food, pasta, cakes and healthy options such as poke bowls. We had a Pace Bowl (RM 30) that comes with a grilled salmon, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, greens, spiral pasta and choice of sesame dressing. Consdering the large chunk of grilled salmon, the pace salmon is a great deal.
Do not be over generous in mixing the sesame dressing into the bowl as it kills the natural flavour of all the respective ingredients, and somehow we found it even better without the sesame sauce. The chef also playfully introduce some chili flakes to the spiral pastas and made it more flavourful. Overall the Pace Bowl is a nice dish.
Grilled Chicken Burger (RM 24) is a pretty decent dish too. The chicken patty is nicely seasoned and flavourful, akin to a teriyaki chicken somehow. We were told French Fries were out of stock and they kindly replaced it with sweet potatoes fries, which is even better in our opinion. The burger bun may be a little sloppy in taste, which could have been better if it was grilled better with some butter and a tad more crispier.
On the other hand, the Ham and Cheese Croissant (RM 19) was rather mediocre. The croissant tasted like a normal soft bread with no airy and flaky texture. In addition, the kitchen crews were probably trying too hard to torch the cheese slices and it burnt the croissant severely, as you could see the black char on the bread. It is hard to justify the croissant with such price range.
Mocha (RM 12) and Cocoa 55% (RM 12) as drinks for the lunch. The barista did the pretty decent job.
