Once I drove pass Chulia Street in Penang and my eyes were captivated by a corner shoplot that resembles Broadway Musical Theatres with glittering gold signboards. At first, I thought it was a fancy new bistro and pub but it turned out to be Gravy Baby, a restaurant famous for pies and cocktails. So we went to check it out some other day, and Gravy Baby has a bible thick menu that offers a wide range of food from pastas, burgers, toasts, pizzas, curries, breakfast set and many more that left us in a conundrum what to order for eat. Well, turned out the food here is quite nice, steep in price but well justified on its large serving size.
I was looking for something that can cater for both my and the toddler's stomach, therefore I ordered a Lemon + Herb Chicken (RM 45) which is not that pungent in taste. At first, I thought the price is expensive but was well justified by the half chicken portion that best shared among 2 persons. The chicken meat is tender and come along with a pleasant smell of herb, and addition of lemon introduces some tanginess which elevated its taste.
Even though the chicken is thick especially on the thigh size but the chefs managed to cook it thoroughly without sacrifising the tenderness of any part. A perfect execution indeed.
French Onion Soup always had been our favourite since our trip to Paris and tasted this classic soup there. Therefore, we got pretty excited as this soup make it on the menu at Gravy Baby.
However, the taste of the soup was no where close to the classic French Onion Soup. It is dark in colour, offers a bold and complicated flavour along with a relatively thick consistency. The sweetness derived from the caramelized onion and the smooth flavour were missing. It was an average soup that goes well with the bread provided but not something we'd expected for.
The soup is priced at RM 23 which is not cheap by the way.
Then it comes the heavyweight for today lunch - Pies. As Gravy Baby is famous for its pies, we ordered Lamb Shepherd Pie. It took them long to bake pies and we had to wait for 40 minutes or more, which we presumed the restaurant has missed out our order.
We enjoyed the pie despite the long waiting time. It has smooth and buttery top which is slightly covered by the signature sauce. The filling is full with minced lamb and the taste is pretty decent. Best shared among 2 person for the pie as it will be relatively surfeiting to finish one pie by your own.
All the pies here are priced at RM 28+ for a pie alone ad RM 36+ for an additional sides.
