Do you want to feel more confident when travelling solo? Maybe you just never feel as though you are seeing each country to its full potential, and you want to do something about this. Either way, there are things that you can do to try and make sure that you make the most out of your experience.
Research
It is so important that you take as much time to research as you can. Find out the best places to go and also learn the top destinations for solo travellers too. If you can do this, then you will soon find that you feel less alone, as you will be surrounded by people who are also there to travel solo. If you can get some advice from people who have travelled solo before, then this will help you out a great deal too, so keep that in mind. If you don’t know where to start, then simply try and look at forums, and engage with people on social media.
Download an App
A lot of cities now have full apps available for local transport. If you can download these apps and have a little play around with them, then you may find that it is easier than ever for you to find your way around. If you do this, then you will soon find that you have an easy way to find your way around and you can also see how places connect with one another too. if you get lost or if you feel as though language is an issue, then you have nothing to worry about either as you can simply point to the destination on your phone and they will be able to advise you.Learn Top Five Phrases
You can usually get by in any language if you take the time to learn five key phrases. These happen to include excuse me, thank you, please, goodbye and hello. It is very easy for you to start or finish a conversation this way, and you can also request help politely. Even if you happen to mispronounce something, it shows that you have made the effort to try and use the local language and this is something that a lot of locals will grow to appreciate. You can rely on apps to translate what you want to say out loud but if you do things the old-fashioned way, then you may come across as being more friendly and you will also be welcomed more. This is especially the case where the tech isn’t as advanced.I recalled when I went to Central Europe in 2019 and I made scribbles on how to say these basic words in Hungarian, Slovak, Slovene, Czech and German. It wass not as tounting as it seems and it only took me few nights to remember these basic words.
Make Friends
We befriended our host in Taiwan and they sent us some gift in the morning! |
Being friendly with the concierge is always a good thing. If you tell them you want something local that is truly free from tourists, then they will be able to advise you on that, and they can send you to wherever you want to go. It does help to be very clear about what you want though. If you can, you need to introduce yourself to the front desk as these people are usually very well connected to the local community. They may even be friendly with café owners and even restaurant owners too. Let them know why you are choosing to visit the location and also share something positive about the city or even the country. Locals tend to love to share what their country has to offer, whether it is traditional BBQ or whether it is a hole-in-the-wall spot.
