The seemingly abandoned building beside the famous Kedai Kopi Ali dan Aleem in Jalan Burmah somehow hosted a roadside cafe that offers Nanyang Coffee and some simple dishes such as Nasi Lemak, Noodles and breads. The cafe is named 1886° and offers the atmosphere a classic and casual kopitiam style in a more sophisticated setting rather by the conventional roadside. Nothing superior on the food nor coffee here but more to a comfort venue to get a quick fix on your empty stomach.
We gave a try on their 1886 Zha Jiang Mian (RM 8.90) and Nasi Lemak Rempah Chicken (RM 10.90). The Zha Jiang Mian is midly seasoned, unlike the conventional ones that has a strong or pungent fermented soybean paste. Give the noodles a bit of sambal to introduce a mild hot sensation and the overall taste should be fine. It should be noted that 1886 used curvy instant noodles instead of the thick yellow noodles in their Zha Jiang Mian too.
The Nasi Lemak Rempah Chicken here looks like an upgraded version of the classic Nasi Lemak with the inclusion of a few pieces of deep fried chicken. Somehow, the nasi lemak lacks the soul as the sambal was too mild in flavour and exert more sweetness instead. On top of that, the fried chicken was too dry in texture to enjoy.
1886° also offers a range of panini breads that go well with a cup of decent coffee here. Non-caffein person will be devasted to find out that all the drinks here are caffeine based though.
All in all, 1886° is a decent place to hang out and enjoy some comfort food with decent pricing.
