Sin Chew Yam Rice 新洲芋頭飯 @ Lebuh Katz, Penang

More fancy cafes and restaurants are opening in Georgetown and the traditional eateries are gradually fading out in the urbanization. However during our recent trip of randomly locating food places in Georgetown, we stumbled upon this traditional Teochew style Yam Rice - Sin Chew Yam Rice (新洲芋頭飯) at the junction of Lebuh Katz and Lebuh McNair (nearby to Lebuh Cecil Market). It is a well kept traditional eatery contrasted by the nearby modern restaurants.

Unlike the conventional yam rice that comes with pickled vegetable soup with pork slices and innards, this Teochew style offers a selection of dishes such as Tau Eu Bak, Lobak, Sambal Eggs, and 3 types of soup - pickled vegetable soup, egg soup and white raddish soup that you can pick to go along with your yam rice. The concept is akin of economy rice but over here, the crews will assist to deliver the dishes to your table.

The service here is good, attentive and fast. I was alone carrying my little girl and the crews helped me with the dishes delivery and ensure things are well taken care of. Was not expecting these types of services in a regular kopitiam in Penang actually. The dishes taste were pretty good and we enjoyed thoroughly of all of them. Some commended the white raddish soup is popular here but unfortunately we missed it.

Dishes always run out by late lunch due to its popularity. Hence, be there early to grab the delicacies if you are planning to dining here. Nevertheless, the food was not cheap but still affordable though. Total cost was RM 30+ for all the dishes in the displayed picture, plus a sambal egg, and additional portion of tau eu bak and 2 cups of drinks. It is understood that inflation has taken places so much that cost price has gone up tremendously too.
